There’s a small stage inside McCackery’s. There’s barely room for a trio on it, but it’s got gear for eight musicians piled all over.
A door at the back opens and the band files onto the stage: the same round-headed, bowling-ball-faced people from Scambot’s dream. Plus one whose head is sort of rectangle-bird shaped, were there such a thing as a rectangle-bird.
Kootch: Oooooo! I hope they play their hit!
These are The Quiet Children, a band of mystery and legend: Ember, FlightRisk, Baum, Bedelia, Verity, Tumbler, Humbler, and Dan the Football Fan.
Their one freak hit, “Cold Hands,” came out in the early ’90s and was embraced as a comforting homage to CSN-style soft rock. The Children take their places and kick off their matinee with:
Cold hands
Cold hands
I knew a girl with cold hands
She was rich
She made hay in the Bahamas
Five weeks stoned on a throne of chrome
She learned little from the llamas
But she was foursquare, elastique, rampant...blist’rin’... stone fantastique.
Cold hands
Cold hands
Cold hands
I knew a girl with gold hands
Stole my soul
Rode us down the river
Demons gnawin’ at all our bones
But one thing makes the devil shiver
‘Cause she was foursquare, elastique, rampant...blist’rin’... stone fantastique.
A smiling older couple claps on 1 and 3 during the instrumental section. It is very sweet actually.
Cold hands
Cold hands
I knew a girl with cold hands
Now she’s mist
Vapor’d way into the ether
France or Finland, I don’t know
Shoulda knowed a toad like me would never keep her
But she was hardcore...big fun...way deep...snake tongue... foursquare...elastique...rampant...blist’rin’...
Stone fantastique.

Mike Keneally has been a lot of things in his 35 year career: stunt guitarist/keyboardist, singer/songwriter, orchestral
composer, producer, music director, painter, and more. After getting his start in Frank Zappa’s legendary 1988 big band, Keneally released his first solo album hat. in 1992. Since then he has released dozens more and is working on a new double album.
This recording makes a great workout companion! All tracks exercise my mind while I'm power walking the hills where I live in Massachusetts. Keeps the feet moving for my daily 3 miles. Thank you MFTJ and all Keneally music. rondidonato
I have been a huge fan of the great MIKE KENEALLY for many years. He is such a brilliant talent! I’m really really enjoying the latest MFTJ album a great deal. “What Wally Thinks” and “I Remember When Candy Bars Were A Nickel” respectively are a perfect one-two punch to open up an album! I’ll be enjoying this one for a long long time!! Danny Cavazzi
