In a distant land, a father and son are in medieval garb, riding on horseback… Audience: (laughter) Narrator: …as they amble through towns, fields and farms on a quest of some sort. Long they ride, silently, through a vast array of things. The son speaks first… Son: O, father! Please tell me of the cataclysm, the battle royale. Who, like, took part? Narrator: To which the elder intoned… Father: Listen, my son, to the names of the heroes and scalliflaws bound in these deeds: Gorbenge. Twizz. Fettle and his cousin Somarmatan... Announcer: We’ll be back with The Scambot Holiday Special...right after this! Mike Keneally: voices, instruments and effects Engineered and mixed by Mike Keneally at Chatfield Manor

Both Mollio AND Glem. The Oomaronians and Morkin, the mid-sized dwid… Narrator: Later that evening, the father and son take a break from the quest at the Space-Age Lodge in Gila Bend. Audience: (applause) Narrator: The father continues listing names, and checking out the coffee maker, while the son falls asleep on the floor. Father: Orzabal, Twain, Mishegoo and Fishagee, Wide-Bat the Extreme Sea Serpent...there were others, too. Mindwop, Plato II and Scambot. Son: SCAMBOT, father?? Father: O my son. The Owl 01:51
Narrator: The boy falls peacefully asleep. The elder peers out the window and across the cold, blinding spotlights over the parking lot at the lodge, and he sees a baby owl sitting on his horse’s head. Yes!! Of course!! And at once, he turns on the Motorola in the hotel room...well, what do you know...it’s the credit sequence to The Scambot Holiday Special. Audience: (laughter) (laughter) Narrator: And then Scambot appeared on the screen and said… Scambot: No!! Audience: (gasp) Scambot: It’s not madness to have hope. Narrator: And a single, shining owl feather...the legendary Feather of Holiday Hope...appeared in the room and hovered, amusingly, above the boy’s face, rising and falling in mid-air, buffeted by the mild breeze of the young one’s snores. And with relief and gratitude, the elder understood at once that their quest, the meaning of which had been a complete mystery to him until that moment, was finally, blessedly, at its end. The King Family: Have a happy holiday Holiday, holiday Holly, holly day And if you have a happy holiday You Audience: (applause) Announcer: This has been The Scambot Holiday Special! Thanks for listening! Good night. Mike Keneally: voices, instruments and effects Recorded and mixed by Mike Keneally at Chatfield Manor

about

A fourteen-and-a-half minute ornament for any holiday season, written, produced and performed by Mike Keneally. Contains two new songs, "Holiday Face" (recorded specifically for this project) and "Salve-Dependent Scorpions" (an alternate take from the Scambot trilogy), framed by three short narrative pieces (as they might have appeared on some surreal alternate-universe '60s TV holiday special).

From the liner notes:

Two days ago (Dec. 4) was the fifteenth anniversary of Frank Zappa's passing. I've been obsessively listening to his music in the car for several months without being specifically conscious of the upcoming significance of Dec. 4, but when I realized yesterday what day it was, I was struck by how strongly Frank's presence has been exerting itself in my life lately. Sending out strong love and gratitude to Frank right now.

Possibly as a result of all that, I think he had an unusually strong influence on the construction of The SCAMBOT Holiday Special, but I also feel strong echoes of Firesign Theatre in it, and of Brendon Small's work on Home Movies. And also, very specifically, the influence of variety TV shows from the '60s to the present. So that's a little listing of some of the influences on this insane little thing.

This is an interesting little holiday presentation which I've written and produced here. It's about fourteen‐and‐a‐half minutes long; five tracks, with tracks 1, 3 and 5 acting as framing devices for tracks 2 and 4, which are full‐length studio recordings of the songs "Holiday Face" and "Salve‐Dependent Scorpions."
