about

From Mike: Never previously available for download or streaming, Live at Mama Kin has only been purchasable, until now, as part of the Sluggo! SuperDeluxe package: (store.keneally.com/products/mike-keneally-beer-for-dolphins-sluggo-superdeluxe-2cd-2dvd-download)

Live at Mama Kin finds the quartet BFD of the era (me, Bryan Beller, Marc Ziegenhagen and Jason Harrison Smith) in serious fighting trim – almost literally fighting as we found ourselves in near-fisticuffs with unhappy locals when we parked our truck to unload our gear that afternoon – ah, Boston!

It features our covers of “Immigrant Song” and “Inca Roads,” as well as the rarely played originals “Tug,” “Vent” and “Pencil Music,” an opening improv here entitled “BSSOC,” and a heaping helping of additional live faves. The vintage 1998 recordings were given a shiny new mix in 2013 by Mike Harris and myself. It is a wonderful-sounding document of a ferocious show.

MIKE KENEALLY & BEER FOR DOPLHINS: LIVE AT MAMA KIN

I had a cold. There was miserable traffic getting into Boston. An idiot souvenir shop owner physically assaulted Jason in an argument over a parking spot. Bad pizza occurred. There were any number of reasons why we'd be in a foul mood at the outset of this gig, but we managed to bear it all in reasonably good humor (this album begins with laughter), and the show smoked.

I give thanks to everyone involved with making this recording happen, but most especially to Marc Ziegenhagen, Jason Harrison Smith, and Bryan Beller, who all played incredibly well on this gig. Cheers, gentlemen!
